Though most computer users use only a few major extensions like .txt , .doc and .xls for most of the files they use regularly, occasionally they may have to use a file extension they are not very familiar with. Some times the computer may have the software for reading the file installed, but often the software has to be downloaded from the internet for opening the file.

The file extension mdi corresponds to the Microsoft Document Imaging format and is the default format for generating images for certain programs. Java Application Descriptor files use the file  extension jad , and software to read these files may have to be downloaded from the internet. Some times opening this files can create errors, but using a suitable registry cleaning software, the problem can be solved quickly.

Though a majority of the files we open, read and write when we use a computer have the standard file extensions like .txt for text files, .doc for Microsoft Word documents, and .xls for Microsoft Excel documents, some times we encounter a strange file with an unusual file extension like 9xk, which cannot be opened.

The file extension is defined by the software and enables it to recognize the file format in which data is stored in the file. By default, the software installed on our computer can recognize the commonly used file formats, and if a particular file format is not recognized, the user is asked to search and download the relevant software from the internet.

However, if the particular file format is not used regularly, installing software  to read the file format may take up a lot of memory on the computer and slow it down. Installing the software  on a computer may result in registry changes, as a result of which some older files cannot be read. By using a free registry scanner, these changes in the registry can be detected and undone if required, so that all files can be opened.
